I was just barely five when my parents started sending me and my sisters to Sunday School. We got to ride a bus, so we looked forward to it; and Sunday School was fun. I learned about God and Jesus and Heaven and things most churches teach the very young. One thing bothered me though. I knew that Heaven must be a perfect place because God and Jesus were there, but I knew that I
wasn'tRomans 3:23
For all have sinned,
and come short of the glory of God;.
If they let people in that weren't perfect, then Heaven wouldn't be perfect anymore. Every night before I went to sleep I would pray that God would make a middle place for me because I knew I wasn't good enough for Heaven. (No one told me about purgatory, maybe someone like me invented that one.)
Being a military family meant moving a lot, and so one day we had to say goodbye to our Sunday School. We moved to our new home, and soon found ourselves again riding a bus to another Sunday School. I discovered that I enjoyed sitting next to the older ladies in church during service time instead of going to jr. church. They seemed to always have some small candy, gum or mint to share with me. On that particular Sunday morning the preacher chose to give his own testimony, telling how he came to accept that Jesus was his Savior. He was very clear about what he was saying, and I understood what he was telling us: Jesus already paid for our
sins
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death;
but the gift of God is eternal life
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
, and I did not have to be good enough to go to Heaven because Jesus already was for me!
I was still pretty young, 9 years old; but I prayed that day and asked
Jesus
John 3:16
For God so loved the world,
that He gave His only begotten Son,
that whosever believeth in Him
should not perish,
but have everlasting life.
to forgive the sins and things that kept me from being perfect, and I told Him that I
believed
Romans 10:9-10
That if thou shalt confess
with thy mouth the Lord Jesus,
and shalt believe in thine heart
that God hath raised him from the dead,
thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth
unto righteousness; and with the mouth
confession is made unto salvation.
that Jesus lived perfect for me, then died to pay for my sins, and then that He rose from the dead on the third day. I asked Him to save me and take me to Heaven when it was time for me to die. Then I told Him thank you for saving me.
Maybe I was young, but I certainly felt a huge
load
Romans 5:1
Therefore being justified by faith,
we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ:
lift from me that day! I had found the answer that I was praying for for four years. Shortly after that I was baptized, after careful questioning to make sure I understood what it was all about. I knew it wasn't the baptizing that saved me, but that it showed people that I had made a choice to be identified as a child of God. I still am not perfect, and I still make mistakes, but they are forgiven already, I just need to confess my lack and need to God, and He ever loves and parents me to lead me to a closer walk with Him.
Salvation is a gift that can be understood by a child, and should be received as a
child
Matthew 19:14
But Jesus said, Suffer little children,
and forbid them not, to come unto me:
for of such is the kingdom of heaven. ,
and is available to everyone of all ages. Fortunate is the person who discovers it young, and sorry is the person who never receives it. It is there for
you
Romans 10:13
For whosoever shall call
upon the name of the Lord
shall be saved. .
If you were expecting a story about how bad I was before Jesus saved me, then you may be disappointed, but you don't have to be 'bad' to need salvation; for allRomans 3:10
As it is written,
There is none righteous,
no, not one: are sinners, and Jesus rescued me from the same destiny that awaits anyone who hasn't accepted His salvation. Maybe you have heard this before, and maybe this is new to you, and maybe you have already accepted Christ as your own Savior. Everyone has a story; thank you for reading mine.
